Mike Zoot
"Turn/Service/High Drama"
GuessWhyld GW200
A solid debut 12" from Mike Zoot, highlighted by "High Drama" featuring the mighty Mos Def. Discontinued due to a record pressing defect. This release limited to 2900 copies.
I love this 12", for real. It's one of those rare records that always
makes me smile and feel good about this whole hip hop thing.
The first treat "Turn" is produced by the ShaSelf, the same guy who
produced the Shadyville Allstars 12" a while back. The track is based
on a nice piano sample somewhat similar to the one on Common's
Resurrection original, a kickin drum/bass combo and some
strange noises. Additional strange noises come from the Biz Mark
scratch in the chorus. The topic ? Driving a car. Hmmmmm....
Next up is my fave "Service". With an Extra P sample like that
and Q-Tip in the background you can't possibly go wrong.
"High Drama" is the track that's going to grab the most attention.
Together with his guest Mos Def Mike Zoot they really rip the track.
Once again ill flows and clever use of metaphors over a hilarious DJ
Hi-Tek track. A truly superb piece of hip hop music. - Anonymous
Needless to say, when you
put consistantly dope production together with a confident flow and
understandable lyrics
you get a completely worthwhile 12"...Zoot shines all over, but my favorites are "Service" layed down by
EZ Elpee, which
loops Xtra P's "A wack nigga rhymin' kills a raw beat" over the hook, the
track really
starts rolling when the 2nd verse hits. Zoot fuckin' fully explains his
feeling of what is said
on the hook through so clear rhymes you rarely hear on a major label
release. "High Drama"
is mad catchy, the production is mellow not
holding the two
the emcee's from ripping shit back and forth. Anyway you try to look at it,
Mike Zoot hit
with a completely solid 12". Many blow hot air about having "dope rhymes and
dope beats" but
this shit meets the ciriculum and gets the extra credit, word to big bird. - Peter Agoston
